Yet, the humble beetroot juice has stuck around, claiming to be pumping the fitness circuit and our hearts full of benefits. Why, you ask? If we are to believe the scientific whispers, it's all down to antioxidant overload, LDL cholesterol reduction, and blood pressure regulation.

The Nitrate Narrative: Beets are brimming with nitrates which your body sneakily turns into vasodilating nitric oxide. This is what relaxes and widens your blood vessels, inviting more oxygen-rich blood for a nice cardiovascular circulation. It’s like a hospitality upgrade for your arteries! Sara Riehm, a dietitian specializing in obesity, opines, "This could give blood pressure a slight nudge downwards acting as a natural dilator," but heck no, it's not tossing your hypertension meds into oblivion.

Workout Whisperer: Moving on to the gym puritans. That extra squirt of oxygen may inflate your workout balloon. According to dietitian Johannah Katz, "Beet juice jacks up nitric oxide availability, pumps up blood flow, brings down the oxygen cost of exercise, and helps muscles use oxygen more efficiently." So, it could work as a 'pre-workout perk.' Do remember, though, if you ditch the juice, the effects won't hang around as tenaciously as your ex. Your overall fitness routine still holds the reins!

Brain-Boosting Benefit or Balderdash? The nitrates vaunt to improve blood flow to your brain – good news for cognitive fitness. But before you celebrate, Katz cautions that better blood flow doesn't always equate to boosted cognition, and we need more extensive studies.

Liver Lover or Loather? Our ruby hero is loaded with betalains that could help your liver combat free radicals, with antioxidant support and squashing inflammatory signals. Yet, Katz warns against touting beets as 'liver detox.' She incisively notes, "The liver is the torchbearer in body detoxification anyway."

In essence, while beet juice may be an underdog in the health and fitness arena, it’s hardly a panacea to all ailments. Approach it as a supplemental addition to a balanced lifestyle rather than a flashy quick-fix. As with all things good, moderation and medical consultation are key. So, gulp down that ruby sludge responsibly!
