Overrated Pears & Other Great Fiber Sources Worth Noting
- Sep 28, 2026
If you think pears are the fiber kings of the fruit kingdom, it's time to wake up and smell the chia pudding. Don't get me wrong – pears do shell out some fibers, about 5.5 grams worth in each medium one. But let's not keep our vision pear-shaped, there's a whole universe of fiber-rich foods ready to dazzle your taste buds.
Case in point, chia seeds. With 10 grams of fiber in every two-tablespoon serving, they're a formidable competition to any pear. But they don't stop at that. Loaded with heart-loving omega-3 fatty acids, chia seeds are as good for your cardiovascular system as they are for your gut. These little powerhouses swell up when soaked - think chia pudding. Sprinkle some on your yogurt, smoothie, or cereal, and you've given your dish a fiber upgrade.
Then, there are split peas. A half-cup of the cooked stuff offers 8.2 grams of fiber. They come with a bonus - protein and B vitamins. They can be turned into soups, added to curries, and even casseroles to give you a nutrient punch.
Moving to the fruit section, raspberries blow pears out of the water. One cup offers 8 grams of fiber. They're also stacked with disease-fighting antioxidants. Fresh or frozen, mix them in smoothies, cereals, yogurt or enjoy them as a standalone goodness.
Let's talk about lentils. Cheap and yet a bountiful source of fiber, providing 7.8 grams in a half-cup of cooked lentils. They aren't just beneficial for your gut, but also deliver plant-based protein, iron, and folates. Whether used in soups and stews or salads and patties, lentils deserve to find their way into your diet.
Next in line are fiber-laden pinto beans, and the equally packed black beans, which serve up 7.7 and 7.5 grams of fiber respectively in a half cup. Finally, the creamy avocados give you 7 grams of fiber in each half-fruit and Lima beans with 6.6 grams of fiber per half cup serving.
The point is, fiber need not come wrapped in boring. It can be exciting, tasty, and packed with other nutrients too. If you're tired of chewing on overrated pears for your fiber fix, consider taking chia seeds, lentils, beans, fruits, and vegetables for a spin. Because remember, you don't just eat to live, you live to eat… well!
