Enter glycyrrhizin, the hidden nemesis in our licorice root saga. This compound is known to interact adversely with certain medications and even spike your blood pressure. So, for those with existing high blood pressure or irregular heart rhythms, licorice root might not be the panacea you were hoping for.

Here’s an interesting plot twist - even a daily dose of 100 mg of glycyrrhizic acid, deemed safe by the World Health Organization, could turn your blood pressure charts upside down. Not only does glycyrrhizin lead to sodium retention, fluid build-up, and potassium loss, it could 'cradle' a host of side effects, including increased levels of blood pressure.
