The Future of Flu Season: Home-Delivered Nasal Flu Vaccine
- Aug 23, 2025
The paralytic fear as the nurse prepares that flu shot for you or your child is now a thing of the past. AstraZeneca, a pharmaceutical giant, has recently announced the launch of “FluMist Home” – a nasal spray version of the flu vaccine that can be delivered right to your doorstep, effectively negating the need for you to sacrifice your comfort zone, whether it be your home or office.
For those not in the know, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave "FluMist" a nod last fall, making it the first ever flu vaccine capable of being self-administered or administered to children outside a clinic or pharmacy.
The best part? This service is currently open for orders in 34 states, with plans underway to make it nationwide next year.
From a glance in the history mirror, nasal flu vaccines are not a novel concept. The FDA did approve a nasal spray version called FluMist way back in 2003 before extending its usage to younger kids in 2007. The kicker here is the DIY home delivery concept being introduced by AstraZeneca, allowing a larger number of people to access it easily.
The home-delivered nasal spray flu vaccine works just like its clinic-based counterpart. It stimulates the immune system using incapacitated versions of both A and B types of the human flu virus.
Although suitable for adults under 50 and children over 2, the nasal spray vaccine isn't recommended for everyone. Pregnant individuals, adults over 50, and children under 2 should opt for the traditional flu shot, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Likewise, those with certain chronic health conditions like HIV should also opt for the shot.
How about the usage of this home nasal spray vaccine? Simplicity is the guiding principle here. As per Carlene Muto, MD, the medical director of infection prevention and control with Temple University Health System, it’s as easy as squirting saline solution in your nose.
Side effects of the nasal spray are minimal, mainly including a runny nose and nasal congestion. Some adults may also develop a sore throat. For children 6 and younger, the nasal spray may cause a minor fever.
Ordering FluMist Home is a breeze; just go online, fill out a questionnaire (which will later be reviewed by a pharmacist), and voila – it's en route to your home.
Carlene Muto, MD, observes that those with needle-phobia might find this new home approach appealing. It’s also a definite win for those in rural areas or those with health ailments that make traveling a hassle.
The punchline here is simple - influenza can be deadly. Regardless of the route you choose to protect yourself, getting vaccinated is important. It's time to embrace convenience without compromising on health – order your nasal flu vaccine today.
