Magnesium Mania: The Sleep Aid Trend You Might Crap Out On
- Nov 5, 2025
As we all aim to catch those elusive Z's, the star of the supplement show seems to be magnesium. The humble mineral has been thrust into the limelight, with insomniacs reaching out for their nightly fix. Before we blindly succumb to this supplement’s siren call, we’ve decided to do the homework for you (you're welcome). We cornered our very own Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Sohaib Imtiaz, for a candid chat about the risks involved in hopping onboard the magnesium train.
His approach was simple and direct-better safe than sorry. If your balanced diet has taken care of your magnesium requirements, there's no need for an excess of it jiggling around in your system. It's more trouble than it's worth, potentially leaving you clutching the bathroom door more often than you'd like (that's the eloquent way of warning you about diarrhea, folks).
On top of that, a daily dose exceeding 350 milligrams without deficiency is basically overkill. In most cases, it won't raise eyebrows, but there's a risk of hypermagnesemia, another fancy way of saying ‘too much magnesium’. Moreover, it's harder to monitor since blood tests are often deceptive and can’t accurately reflect your body's magnesium reserves.
To circumvent all these issues, if you're already popping magnesium pills, retake the blood test to make sure you're not overdoing it. But heed this caution: a bout of dizziness or confusion could be your body's cry for help, signaling an excess of magnesium. If you feel nauseous or off balance, it’s best to put the bottle down.
Ultimately, while magnesium may be hoping for supermineral status, it can potentially confuse your kidneys and tussle with certain meds. So, like any bad blind date, always ask questions before you commit. The most foreseeable risk remains a good old bout of diarrhea-and trust me, there's nothing more unglamorous than hover-sprinting to the nearest washroom.
